VOTING “IN THE BAG”
1. While Stevenson and Kefauver make with the whoop-la, Truman and Walter Reuther are making ' ready to pounce on the White House with the same old crowd of tax-fixers, mink coats, freezers and higher prices. )
2. This crowd are as rabid a bunch of wild-eyed j liberals as ever pounded a political pavement. They admit it. They promise the Voter everything. Of course they have to take it away from the people before they can give it back—but they think the people don't know that. j 4 .
3. It was Harry Hopkins who said: “We will tax and tax, spend and spend, and elect and elect!”
4. Eisenhower, on th£ other hand, has delimited federal power—actually in hundreds of different instances. Today the Republicans are a states rights party. They are the -conservative party. Here is the plank on states’ rights:
“The Republican Party pledges its strength for the maintenance of constitutional principles and the enforcement of all laws validly enacted.
Nevertheless, the encroachment of the Federal" ^Government upon the inviolate rights of the citizens of the several states constitutes a direct threat to the freedom of the people and should therefore be strongly resisted. The constitutional guarantees that all rights not specifically delegated to the Federal Government shall be reserved to the states themselves, should be jealously maintained and zealously defended.."
5. This County—and every community in America —is benefited by a two-party system. Neither Stevenson—nor Kefauver—got a single vote at the Democratic Convention. The Democratic leaders in the South have no power within their own party at all. Whyf Because Truman and the bosses have always known that the Southern Voter is “in the bag.”
6. Of course, we voters are always better off with a two-party system and a real choice. Even the Democratic Leaders in the South would gain—if and when the voters in the South decide to climb out of “the bag.”
