Make silage from corn which will not yield a grain crop. This frill be good teed for breeding herds and flocks or for wintering feeder cattle, but will be worth only two-thirds as much as silage from well eared corn.
Save any of the grasses and legumes available as hay or silage provided they art not needed now for grazing.
Feeds to carry cattle through periods of “no pasture” include silage, hay. straw, fodder, corn cobs, and peanut hulls. Com cobs and peanut hulls will require that molasses be added for palatability and a protein supplement for balancing the ration.
Use honeysuckle for grazing where available. Give free access to all acreage possible such as meadow and stubble fields, or any land on which a crop residue remains after harvest.
Creep feed a grain ration to calves which w’ill grade medium and above but which are being stunted due to lack of pasture. Use clacked corn or ground barley, or mixtures of these to which has been added 10 pounds of protein supplement for each 100 pounds of mix. Start them on small amounts of feed and increase it gradually to all they will take.
Kill external parasites by spraying or dipping and internal parasites by a recommended treatment.
