Mr. 1 uckcr explained that under the new system animals will be weighed just prior to their entrance into the auction ring, instead of at the time of unloading from the trucks. For this, special new scales are being constructed next to rhe ring, and these will dial the weights on a board in fulb view to the owner, buyers and the auctioneer. Owners will receive a receipt for the cattle on unloading, and payment after sale will be handled Its at present.
Changeover to this system is said to have support of the packing industry throughout the East Cosat. Under it. buyers are not forced to mark down all livestock to protect themselves in the purchased in the purchase of a few animals that may have been weighed in with excessive fill early on the sale day. In some quarters, it is believed all Virginia auction markets will convert to the system sooner or later in order to provide both farmer and buyer with a more efficient and profitable marketing service.
Mr. Tucker stated that the last regular Monday sale will be held on Monday. September ^3. and that following the first sale so this new basis on Saturday, September 28. all weekly sales will be held on a Saturday. This change in date designed to provide Madison and adjoining county farmers with a better connection w’ith the strong Monday sales at terminal markets in Baltimore and elsewhere. Special Feeder Sales, such as that announced for September 27. will not be conducted on the outweight basis, as few if any of these cattle are expected to sell direct for slaughter.
