Almond Or Dalton?

The many interesting stories of the week—the i'•' •• gangland murder of Albert “Bang Bang” Anaktasia in downtown Manhattan, the romantic rumors of Peter Townsend* squiring “Miss Universe”, even the Buck Rogeresque musings on “Sputnick”—must give way to the important matter of electing our next governor in Virginia.

Number one on. the list of campaign issues is the public school*question. Mrr Almond, our Democratic candidate saysjjy^ he is absolutely against integrating the schools regafeffess. Mr. Dalton, the Repub'licaan candidate says that Almond’s view is impractical, that we must have some integration. and therefore in order to save schools, he proposes his plan that calls for a “little integration”.

We have heard it argued that integration is an absolute matter, like honesty or pregnancy or death. . • there is no “little”. There either is or is not. and a little is altogether.

However, it appears to us that the real issue has escapee most people. Recently combat equipped Federal troops were ordered into Little Rock Arkansas to take control of Central High School- This order was issued by Dwight Eisenhower, alone without authority of the representatives of the people, the Congress of the United States- Eisenhower claimed the right to occupy Little Rock with troops because of a desision 'made by a Supreme Court, not elected by the people, but appointed largely by himself: Those troops wounded people standing on private property as invited guestsThose troops arrested with warrants and held in custody without charge a number of Little Rock citizens- Any such action by a State Law enforcement officer w’ould be subject to criminal action and money damage suits. All this was done under the guise of the, 14th amendment of our Federal Constitution, that clearly states. Congress, the duly elected representatives of the people shall pass such laws as they deem necessary to enforce the 14th amendment. They ha> e not legislated on public schools and we strongly feel they have no right to legislate on a matter wholly supported and wholly owned and wholly operated within a state.

When Mr. Dalton says we must have some integration, he has recognized the right of the President of the United States to regulate the schools of Virginia, and if they are not regulated to suit the President’s wishes, the right to send in Federal troops to occupy us. as they did in Little Rock. This, we cannot stomach. This is why the coming election is so vital to Virginia and why we support Mr- Almon ! in hi campaign. BC’B.Jr
