Disease An experimental antibiotic mixture, F-17, developed by the U. S. Department of Agriculture, has effectively controlled bean rust in preliminary greenhouse tests.
Plant pathologists at VPI say this antibiotic mixture also showed ability to eradicate disease. When the concentrated mixture was applied to leaves four days after they had been inoculated with rust, and after early symptoms of the disease were evident, the disease was controlled and rust spores failed to form.
Further sstudy is expected to identify mora completely the exact antibiotics tHat give the mixture its promising anti-funga^ activity.

It’s time to tafe steps to control black knot disease in plum and cherry plantings,1 advise plant pathologists at V.P.I.
They say to prune out and bum all diseased black knots. Cut at least four inches below the obvious infection. Destroy all diseased parts and also badly infected trees. Make a dormant spray application at least every two years, using 88-100 bordeaux mixture. Home fruit growers can*use"6-2/3 ounces 'hydrated lime in 5 gallons of water; or 4 pints of liquid lime-sulfur or 5 cups of dry lime-sulfur powder in 5 gallons of water. Never spray when the temperature is below 45 degrees F.
