Recently I happened to DC nana1 ling’ a large number of Lincoln pennies and it was easy to see j^he image of tne former President was sharp on some and nearly worn smooth on others. Some pennies were quite old; clearly they had been handled many, many times roughly, carelessly, greedily, lovingly, joyously, unselfishly. Lincoln’s facial characteristics, the
high cheekbones, the shape of the ; ear, the strong set of the jaw, had been wiped away yet he amid still have been recognized by any school child; I thought of the times when we were young and used to put pennies on the railtrack so' that the train could flatten them out. They were always distorted very thin and very longbut even then Lincoln’s face could be identified. i / . i
