(This is the way prospects for Virginia farm prices looked to the Virginia Department of Agriculture on Friday. The Department offers it to farmers with the warning that no one can predict prices and be right all the time.
I HOGS
Hog prices still look as if-they should start their usual 'downward trend shortly after mid-July. The trade seems to think they will hold for another three weeks. Spring pig numbers indicate sizeable increases ini’hogs coming to market from now until about September compared with the same period last year. But fanners' indicated intentions to hold back more sows and gilts for breeding confuses the picture,
The nation's December pig crop was about 9 percent above last year. Some of these pigs should have showed up in June as slaughter hogs, but June slaughter was just about the same as a year a^o.
The January pig crop was up T6 percent, and February 15 percent, indicating more market hogs in July, August and possibly September.
June 1 hog inventory figures for the U. S. don’t bear this out. Hogs six months old or more were up only one per cent.
But figures for the nine corn belt states do. In this area, hogs six months old or more were up six percent, hog: 3-6 months old up 17 percent and hogs less than three months down four, percent, reflecting fewer pigs born in March and April.
