Did you Imow that Alaska, the 49th State, and Hawaii, when officially admitted to Statehood, will be the only two states served entirely
by Independent telephone companies?
Such is Hie fact, according to Harry* C. Cole, local manager of the Virginia Telephone & Telegraph Co. Mr. Cole, quoting information compiled by the United States Independent Telephone Association, of which the local company is a member, said that 13 Independent companies, which operate 34,000 telephones, cooperate with the Alaskan Communication System, a branch of the U. S. Signal Corps, to provide our largest i state with modern and up-to-date telephone service.
Hawaii, Mr. Cole said, will be- j come the second state served entirely by Independent telephone facilit i e s. The Hawaiian Telephone Company of Honolulu with more than 200,000 telephones, provides modern telephoneservice for the: islands of Hawaii, Kaiim, Lanai,' Maui, Molokai, and Oaahu.
The United States still leads the world in total telephones with 65,000,000. Of rim number, morev than 10,000,000 telephones are operated by 3,850 Independent (nonBell ) telephone companies. In comparison, England has 7,354,000 and Russia has only 3,558,000.. A recent survey also shows that the average number of telephone per 100 people is about 80% higher in those countries where the telephone companies are privately op- ’ erated. The local telephone company now serves 236 telephones in this area. . ,
