“Teamster’s Union how silly can you get?’
No, 1 don't really believe the cooky truck-driver boss would be welcomed as a hero, albeit a tarnished one,, bv the hard pressed poultry producers and marketers of our area. There is a grim warning to all sincerely interested in the Valley economy, however, implicit in recent news du^atches from New Jersey. Mr./lloffa engirire-ed an invitation to address 1,000 poultry fanners of the Vineland and Lakewood sections. He offered to organize them under the wing of his big Teamsters organization, ma;'\ of whose kev officers, according to testimony givrn Congressional investigators, emphasize the strongman approach to employeermplovrr relations.
"Hie news reports said the poultrvinen, bitter about continuing lev market prices, shouted approval of the Hof fa bid, and only one dissenting vote was heard.
Kmboldened by this indn'ation of support, Mr. Hof fa said he would urge his union’s units in other States to press campaigns to recruit farm ^groups.
Whv would a farmer align himself with Jimmy Hoffn? It is a strange alliance, to be sure, and its development can best be explained bv canny timing of the union boss’ offer to capitalize on unrest and angre born of growing despair.
Whether poultry locals actually will be formed by the Teamster’s Union remains to be seen. Hie strategy of such units in attempting to advance the economic wellbeing of poultrymen has not been unveiled. In many major trading centers, truck transportation has been Hoffaized thoroughly.
