Over 3!/4 million pounds of grass and legume seeds were sown in Virginia during 1959 under the Agricultural Conservation Program (ACP). On these grasses and legumes 328,459 tons of lime and 94,050 tons of fertilizer were used last year with ACP cost sharing.
These figures are taken from a summary report just compiled by the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation State office. This amount of seed, lime and fertilizer on which farmers received ACP cost-sharing payments does not include seedings of grasses and legumes, nor aprlications of lime and fertilizer which farmers made independently without ACP assistance.
The report shows that 179,966 acres were seeded under ACP at an average rate of 18 pounds of grasses and legumes sown per acre.
An unique feature of ACP is the ‘‘Purchase Order” in connection with purchase of seed* lime and fertilizer used under the program. A purchase order is issued by the ASC county office manager to the farm for a specified quantity of the required material. When the purchase order is presented by the farmer to a dealer authorized to fill such purchase orders, it guarantees to the dealer that he will receive from the Government payment in the amount stated in the purchase order when he has made delivery.
In Rappahannock County there were 1,260 acres seeded in grasses and legumes in 1959. On this acreage there was 2,952 tons of limestone and 968 tons of fertilizer.
There were 211 purchase orders amounting to $14,945 used in purchasing thq above lime and fertilizer. Purchase ^orders are not used for seeds in this County.
