Mr.-Raymond Johnson, Chairman, Safety Committee, asked me to write an article on “Falls—-Our No. 1 Hazard in Rappahannock.” This seemed like a simple little request, but when I started to write, that was another matter. All I could think of to start was, “Don’t Fall” which seemed fairly obvious. So I asked my husband, “What can 1 write about Falls?"
“Oh,” he said, “There are 101 things you can write about that. You could write that conditions which cause falls should be avoided; never pile all the old magazines which you intend to store upstairs, on the steps (like you do) ; and never put all the empty jars for the basement on the basement steps (like you do); and never kick off your shoes in the middle of the floor for people to fall over (like you do). As a matter of fact, it is a mystery to me how you ever got on a safety council!”
I thought, I throw so much around I have to be careful, but I said, “1 only asked you for one thing.” He had gotten warmed up to the subject, however, and he continued, “You might say when using a ladder, always be sure you are on the floor or ground before letting og. You have no idea how many falls result from that. I think I heard a member of the council had trouble with that. Also, one of your club members climbed up on the kitchen cabinet and stepped off.”
