Ewe Management
For Top-Lamb Values
The market value of the lambs we sell tan be increased about $8.00 each through planned breeding and marketing at little, or no, increase in production costs. How? By getting the ewes in breeding condition early, breeding them to Start lambing December 1-15, and getting the lambs to weigh 90-100 pounds and to market in April, May or June when prices are highest. A study of 1239 Rappahannock lambs marketed in 1959 shows: we sold lambs every month of the year; sold 60% when prices were lowest; and 53% at weights too light to make top market grade.
Grade and weight are very closely related: 63% of the Blue O (Prime) grade weighed 91-100 pounds; 48 % of the Red O s (the next lowest grade) weighed 81-90 pounds; and 58% of the Red Shoulder lambs weighed 71-80 pounds. The average prices of these grades throughout the year at all markets were as follows: Blue 0-$23.32; .Red 0-$21.54 and Red Shoulder-$18.24.
