Ned Johnsons

Score Again

The Ned Johnsons again received national recognition, this time in the April issue of the Farm Journal. This time the article features the Johnson’s Angus cattle. Before it was the Johnson family themselves, in the Progressive Fanner. The sequence couldn’t have been better; the people, the land, the cattle.

Another pojnt of interest: The ~ same day our copy of the Farm Journal came, there was an envelope addressed to me containing a letter to Mr. Johnson. I quote: “Your article in the Farm Journal was read with much interest. I „ would like more oinformation about your cattle, and what kind of : price you have on a two year old bull.” Signed, James C. Rice; i ' Spencer, Ind. “P.S. Mi. County Agent give this to Mr. Johnson.”

See why a chilly shfver ran up my spine ?

The bull in the picture (and its a beauty in color - lush green pastures, neat fencing and the Blue Ridge as the back ground) is the one Ned got at one of the R.O.P. sales held at Front Royal Beef Cattle Research Center. (That should make Bob Priode, Supt. proud). Rode to this sale with Ned^and “Mom,” as he affectionately call his wife,

En route to the sale Johnson kept quiet about his being on the _>-rlook for a bull. Shortly after* getting there “B” Miller came and asked that I help him pick a bull. We went over the records on-dam and on-feed and made a selection,, then confirmed it by looking at the bulls. “B” asked that I bid on the bull for him.

When the auction started, we four Rappahannockans were together on the bleechers, “B”, then me, then Ned with Elizabeth on his right. Soon “our” bull was led into the auction ring. At iirst thebidding was fast and from all over! Gradually it narrowed torfour interested parties, then to three, and then to two! I noticed the ring man was taking bids from someone close to me. The son-of-agun ran my bids up better than $100.00! Who was he? The ring man’s eyes shifted slightly. Finally I turned and asked Ned if he was bidding? He exploded. “B” laughed and said “let him have the bull.” 1

So Johnsons got the Angus featured in the Farm Journal article and I all but lost my ride back home!
