The 1961-62 Virginia deer kill total will probably be between
32,500 arid 33,000 according to a nearly cbmplete count of big game tags by the State Game Commission. While this reflects a drop of over 3,000 animals from last years record total of 36,165, it is Virginias second highest deer'kill on record. The western kill was down over 2,000 from last'year’s total and the eastern kill is expected to be down about 1,000 when all tags are tallied. Caroline County again led the state with a total of 1,966. Augusta County was the biggest producer in the west with a take of 1,921 deer.
The decrease was attributed, in art, to an increase in the number of oor quality deer ranges which are carrying as many or more than they can support. On these densely populated areas with large blocks of mature timber, deer have found competition keen and food scarce. The health of these herds is not up to par.
Checking station examinations of deer made by Game Biologists in Bath County showed an almost complete lack of yearlings indicating that something happened to the 1960 fawn crop. The rough winters in 1959 and 1960 fould have caused poor fawn production and poor survival of those fawns that were produced, biologists concluded.
Game biologists are convinced that Virginia deer herds will continue to decline in some areas as what has been good brushy deer range grows into mature timber, kill of 226.
