A new survey by the U. S. Public Health Service shows that cancer continues in the number two spot in Rappahannock County, second only to heart disease, among the major causes of death. The number being cured is rising, however.
Locally, it finds, cancer is responsible for 15.1 percent of the annual mortality. The survey, with figures from all parts of the country, | sheds light on the cancer picture In each area. It gives data on the incidence of lung I cancer as well as all other forms of the disease. Its release comes at a time when special interest is being focused, because of the International Cancer Congress just held in Tokyo, on the progress that is being made in coping with this scourge.
The 15.1 percent toll recorded in the local area is compared, in the PHS report, with that in other sections of the country. In the United States as a whole it amounts to 16.1 percent and, in the State of Virginia, to 14.7 percent.
