We’re losing millions of acres of prime farmland every year, with only marginal prospects of replacing this land, and much of that would have to be done with high usage of valuable energy, sources of which are also .far from infinite.
Valuable farmland must be protected. It is simply irreplaceable, and there are limits. The tragedy is especially visible to those of us living in the Northern Piedmont of Virginia—an area of some incredibly productive farmland which is steadily being eroded by urban expansion and highway-mania.
The lesson strikes us as being frighteningly clear.
