A more innovative approach of a town drainfield, or subsurface disposal system, would have monthly residential fees of $4.50 and commercial fees of $13.50. “We’re pushing the drainfield concept,’’ said Luke. Final determination of which alternative Sperryville will use will be made following a public hearing and in conjunction with Mackey Engineering, who have done the feasibility studies, the SWCB and the Health Department.
George Long from Mackey Engineering said that Boones Mill had just received step one, facility plan approval, from the SWCB for a similar town drainfield. Long said that Boonesville, 30 miles south of Roanoke, had been considered, along with Sperryville, as one of the two worst pollution cases in the state.
Long maintained that the subsurface disposal system envisioned for Sperryville is a lot more detailed in design that the standard home septic field. He said that well treated effluent would be put underground, away from the flood plain area and any possible contamination of ground water and wells.
