January is a great month. It marks tiie beginning of anew year, mad a fresh start — that is, until youreceive your credit card bill and realize just how much you spent on presents and food during the holidays.

There are a few simple ways to make sure you start your year on the right financial track.

•Plan a Christmas budget and stick tti it. Decide on a figure you can realistically afford, then divide the total amount into budgets for gifts, food, and miscellaneous items.

• Make a list of people to whom you normally give presents. and check only those you really need to buy a present.

•Allocate a reasonable budget for each person before you go shopping

• Discuss gift giving with your friends. You’re probably not the only one who's experiencing hard times financially. You might be abb to ail agree not to give a gift this year, or set a pncecap, such: as $15. per person.
