Soek ball—"soak ball" we used to call It—had its turn a little later, and it made a big hit with us. It was a good, strenuous outdoor pastimes and, although the socking that was the main feature of it used to decorate our hides with more or less black and blue spots, I never heard of any one being killed outright. At first the ball used by us was a comparatively soft one, homemade always, and covered with sections cut from an old bootleg. In time we seemed to hanker after something harder, and I hit on the scheme of winding the yarn of which the inside of the ball was made over a chunk of lead. A sock of that, ball never failed to make an impression.
