We were getting lots of outdoor exercise and muscular training from our rough game, a very good preparation for what was coming. Our town was growing rapidly and new arrivals from the east brought the news that baseball was becoming epidemic east of the Allegheny mountains and had already passed over into Ohio and Michigan. It seemed likely that it would break out in Iowa before long, but I was loyal to the old favorite until the very last.
