I shall never forget my first experience in my new position. I had been at Rockford only a day or so when I was ordered to report at the ball grounds for practice. It was early in the spring and so chilly that an overcoat was a necessity. I found when I reached the grounds that my ability as a batsman was -going to be tested, and as I took my stand on the plate I shivered as though I was coming down with the ague. It wasn't all due to the cold, either stage fright was responsible for part of it. Don't forget, please, that I was only a big kid, a stranger in a strange land, and that I was so anxious to make a first good impression that I was almost powerless.
