I was at the opera the first night that Patti made her appearance, and the wild enthusiasm of the house over the new diva was indescribable. Her extraordinary youth and beauty, the marvelous quality of her voice, the facility and ease with which she sang, and the complete grasp she showed of her part made an impression which time has not obliterated. She had come with a certain reputation, and the audience waited patiently as she made her appearance.
