I had some reason to feel that baseball was a substantial proposition. On several occasions during the past season I had been approached by managers of various clubs with offers that seemed almost fabulous to my youthful mind. What I really wanted, and tried my best to get, was a position with the Chicago club, then under the management of Tom Foley, the veteran billiard room keeper. Tom took my application as a Joke, and finally Informed me that he was looking for players of reputation and not for schoolboys with the baseball bug. Although I didn't know It at the time— I was mighty sore over my failure to get to Chicago—It so happened that old Tom's turndown was one of the most fortunate things that ever came my way.
