That season of 1874 brought the biggest boom in baseball that ever struck the earth. Professional, semi-profesatonal and amateur clubs sprung up everywhere, and the interest in ths game was at white heat. Baseball certainly had become the national pastime, and the time had come when missionaries were to be sent to set forth the glories of the game on foreign soil. The first to do business in that line was the dub of which I was a member, and our companion team was the champion Bostons. It was arranged that we should go over to 'England on a sort of campaign of «dncation—to show the cricket fans over there that the Americans had a better game than theirs.
