Then I began to frequent the Flegal house, and I actually neglected my business to Invent excuses for doing so. Lying did not come natural to me, but I certainly tried hard enough to become expert in finding pretexts for visiting the little girl who had caught me on the fly. Some of these tales must have seemed rather fishy to the Flegals, but any old yarn was good enough for me.
