During th first half of 1956 Rappahannock fanners blood tested 40.6% of their cows or a total of 3,098 head, for Bangs disease. Of this number only 25 reactors, or .'8%.were found. This is VERY , GOOD!
During the same period ony 168 heifers were Bangs vaccinated which represents but 8.1% of the heifers in the county 4-8 months of age. This js VERY BAD!
Blood testing is as it should be, however, it does not keep Bangs Disease or Brucellossis out. Vaccination protects or makes the cow immune for three to four calving ‘ periods. Vaccinations are still free.
TRe next County-wide heifer vaccination will be in November. If you have heifers that are border liners with regard to age get them vaccinated now. Vaccination of heifers past 8 months of age is not recommended.
Present indications are that nominations for both the Northern Vi irgina and Rappahannock Feeder Calf Sales will be considerably higher than a ,vear ago. Dol
