terbuck, of Spcrryville, has been assigned to “D”’ Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Training Regiment for eight weeks of basic infantry . training.
During the next eight weeks he will be learning the fundamentals of being an infantry soldier. This includes classroom lectures in such subjects as military courtest, first aid, map reading, and personal hygiene. iHe will also learn to fire the M-I rifle on several ranges.
After this eight weeks of training. the trainee is given about 14 days leave after which he may or may not return to Fort Jackson. If he returns to Fort Jackson he may attend eight more weeks of individual training or an Army school. Fort Jackson offers schooling in several specialities associ[ ated with an Army Division.
Fort Jackson is one of the country”s largest infantry training centers and also conducts a program of training for young men training under the provisions of the Reserve Forces Act of 1955.

Garden Fence
It seems a bit early to be awarding any blue ribbons for garden vegetables or naming the champion cabbage grower etc. but Mr. D. C. Updike has upset things a bit by exhibiting a head of lettuce that weighed 2 lbs. and 10 oz. The bottom leaves had a spread of over 2 feet and they looked tender, “Believe it or not”. The Wade H. Massie garden across from the News office promises an abundance of everything as do many around the town. They are gardens to be proud of with no apologies offered to Sperryvillians who have always been a little “High-Hat" where gardens were concerned. Mr. Upton Weakley’s is holding its own (and that’s saying a lot.) He lives in Culpeper now, but drives up several times a week to see that the “weeds don’t get ahead of him”. He’s determined not to let that happen. We’ve never seen a weed in his garden and it’s hard to picture one there.
