Virginia law did not require statewide registration of births until 1912, although a few cities and counties began recording births in random fashion as early as 1853. Hence most native Virginians now reaching the age of retirement under Social Security cannot prove age by copies of birth certificates from public records. In fact a surprisingly large number of aging Virginians do not know exactly how old they really are.
Din ing World War I thousands of men registered for the draft but were never called for service. With increasing frequency this office is receiving inquiries as to where WW I draft cards may be found so that copies of official age records made 40 years ago can be obtained. All draft cards of WW I for the 48 states are located in the Federal Records Center. 221 Saint Joseph Street, East Point. Georgia.
Persons writing should give full name under which the applicant registered; address at the time of registration and approximate date race;| dare of birth; occupation at the time of registration; or any other data that might help in locating the individual’s record. I have been informed that there is no charge for sendees rendered by the Center.
