In a recent speech President Eisenhower called for an ambitious ■program of Education to provide more scientists, America’s failure to train enough scientists, researchers, technicians and engineers long has been recognized. Educators have sounded warnings time and time again.
Now, the bitter fruit has been harvested. America has taken a back seat to Russia in satellite development.
The nation is stunned. Government leaders are picking up the words and the warnings of the educators. In that sense, Russia’s suptniks have been good for, the United States.
We are waking up to our educational needs. What we will do to meet them remains to be seen.
Scientists are born in the early vea*-s of schooling.. If the U. S. is to have the best scientists, then it must have the best education system from the first grade onward.
Certainly, colleges and graduate schools will have to strengthen their training. But whether or not a youngster is going to take that training generally is determined years before they .ever reach college. .
