Tile Red Cross now operates 50 regional centers. Blood is collected processed and stored in refrigerators until it is distributed to hospitals or shipped to laboratories which have contracts with the Red Cross to convert the blood to such derivatives as gama globulin, serum albumin, and fibrinogen.
Only about one fifth of all Red Cross collected blood is donated at centers. The other eighty per cent is taken from vqlunteer donors at visits of boodpiobiles which operate' out of the centers. The bloodmobiles takc their equipment' to industrial and business concerns in the city, but more often to smaller communities in the terrijtories of the more than 1,450 Chapters which particiate in the Blood Program.
