Although we still haven’t evolved methods that have been entirely satisfactory, we bad the Bureau of Census do a special survey during 1957 for Us and expect their final report to come out soon. Based on the best estimates that our association Has ben able to make, the people of the United States presently spend about $25 billion a year for ..travel, both a home and abroad for purposes of business and pleasure. ' _ i I want to give you just a little of the breakdown on these travel expenditures. This $25 billion is arrived at in this way; about $18 billion of it is domestic tourist travel, a little more than $5 billion is for business travel ,and a little less thin $2'billion for travel abroad. So, you can see what a big man the tourist is. He spends $18 bllion a year. The business man iraveIing*for business purposes spends $5 billion. The entire amount spent on travel abroad, in spite of all the talk, is only $2 billion which is about one-eighth of the total.
