Knew one woman with little education who sent her son through college with money she made from corn shuck door mats. They arc simple-to make and can be done at nights while watching TV. Also saw an attractive door mat woven into a scalloped design with rope. : . ! > >

Recently we have had tourists by the thousands passing through the county. Also we have a number of attractive road side stands. To the amateur they seem to do good business. They sell Rappahannock apples, cider, vegetables, but I don’t know of a single one selling locally produced handicrafts. The gift shop at Big Meajdows specializes >in handicrafts made by mountain folks. Understood most of their wares are obtained in Tennessee. Then too this might be a way old people can get a new lease on life. Essentially we all want the feeling of usefulness.
