The primary reason we cultivate corn, as most realize, is for weed control; however many people cultivate soil in corn fields much too deep and in doing so prune off the, roots which aft vital to growth. Two inches is plenty deep.
When chemicals are not applied as pre-emergence sprays cultivation with a spike tooth harrow or rotary hoe from time com starts to come up until it is 2-3 inches high is very effective.
Keep in mind it takes about a 40 bushel per acre corn yield to meet production costs. To make a profitable yield; select your best com soil, use an adapted com hybrid, check your planter for the right plates and be sure it is putting down desired rates, .use proper fertilizer analysis applied at optimum rates, and control weeds.
