Orch^rdists,, for thte most part being a rather progressive lot, will likely increase their projection per tree in the next 15 years, by 20-30% according to horticulturist at Virginia Tech. This is expected because of: use of milder spray programs, more effective mouse control methods, better fertilization methods, and wider use of chemical thinning sprays. Also in the .last ten years per tree production has increased 2% probably due to some of the above practices already having been employed plus the use of stop-drop sprays, less productive orchards being removed from production, etc.

A trend toward the integration of the apple production and processing industries is expected to continue.

At present about 50% of Virginia’s apple production is for processing and will likely remain so if producers are able to make a modest profit. What per cent of Rappahannock apples are marketed through processing channels?
