Only one processor is presently receiving at these prices. Other processors’ ideas arc bound to be influenced by the volume of the flow of friut to him. For an extra $0.25 in price, growers could afford to waste 20% of their processing crop and still wind up with the same total dollars at the season’s end.
We feel it is imperative that growers again divert from processors to the fresh market all quality fruit of acceptable varities and that they voluntarily diminish the total crop by refusing to harvest the small-sized low-grade apples.
Present prices for small and low grade apples are even lower than last year’s and cannot possibly be harvested, handled and hauled at a profit.
Growers are advised to take a lesson from the very excellent peach deal just finishing in the area. The crop was predicted to be too large to move easily or profitably. Almost without exception yields were substantially below estimate and the crop, under firm hands, moved to market smoothly and at good prices. TThere are strong indications that the apple crop is developing similarity. Size is not up to average. Hot weather and cloudy days have taken thetr toll. Processors, as they did last year, may be looking for apples at a better price later on.
