Chester Gap Fire CoOrganized

Saturday night, March 12, under the sponsorship of the Chester Clap Citizens Association, about 40 men of the community formed a Volunteer Fire Department. The following officers were elected to direct the newly organized company: President, Merritt Greeley; Vice President, Bradley Williams,; Secretary, Harry B. Hickey; Treasurer, Gilbert Smith; Chief, Herman Williams; 1st. Ass’t. Chief, Elmer Hickerson; 2nd. Ass’t. Chief, Garfield Williams; 3rd Ass’t. Chief, Albert Wines.

In addition to the above listed officers, David A. Williams, Sherman Williams and Andrew R. Williams were elected as members, of the Board of Directors.

Appointed as drivers were Hubert Gilkev, Downing Williams, Sherman Williams and Gilbert Smiith; as mechanics. John Williams and Jim Riley. '

This is the first organization of its kind at Chester Gap and the need for it has become most apparent in this fast growing community located on the northern boundary of Rappahannock County.

Initial equipment will probably be purchased from Washington, Va. Fire Company with additional items procured from Civil Defense. Until a permanent fire house can be erected, the equipment will be housed in Sherman William’s barn. '*
