Last Friday night on the Rappahannock High School basketball court two different theories of basketball ' met head on. Nokesville was the ‘Immovable Object," in that they presented an experienced, tough defensive unit. Rappahannock was the “Irrestible Force”, in that we featured a run and shoot type of offense. In this game the ‘Irresistible Force” won.
We came from behind in the first quarter and obtained a slim lead. We held on to an right point lead throughout the game by sheer determination. Our players were bruised and hurt throughout the game, but they did riot give an inch. They demonstrated what every winning team must possess, desire and fight.
To win, we knew that our defense had to get the ball back to our shooters more than usual. Against the tough Nokesville defense we needed more chances at the basket. The defense came through admirably. They blocked shots, tied the ball up and upset the Nokesville {dan of attack, which was simple, a short shot under the basket. Even in the final minutes Nokesville wouldn’t shoot from outside.
We have three experienced players on the offensive unit. Ginger Russell was out with a twisted ankle. Rena Pullen had her worst shooting night of the year. This , normally would mean certain defeat. Bfit, throughout the yea* we . have been playing our Freshmen and Sophomores h every game. This policy -beat us against Loudoun_it won against Nokesville. Tish Kilby, Doris .Dodson and Ann Jenkins filled up the gap and scored at least one basket each. As great as Shirley Brown is, and she scored 22 points, a team is no better than it’s balanced attack against a good defensive unit.
Final score of the game was 39 for Rappahannock and 32 for Nokesville, , -
