Fortunate indeed is the community, and we doubt if there are any, that has had no distressing problems. But fortunate is the cotnmu—nity that has produced men and women of courage who are willing to give of their talent and time_ do the best they can—to keep the history of their “home place” as clean as possible so their children and their children’s children can be justly proud of it.
In the late 1890’s, the citizens of Washington, Va., “The First Washington Of All,” were much concerned about the Saloons, as good citizens all over the country were, and they determined to do something about it. And they did. ' Headed by Mrs. Bradford Baggarly and Mrs. Harry Miller, they V organized a chapter of “The Womans Christian Temperance Union” to fight the evil that had brought tragedy in a number of places.
Mrs. Baggarly and Mrs. Miller chose the educational approach, beginning with the children and young people of the county. The State organization helped in every way, supplying printed material which was distributed in all homes.
The project that seemed to appeal to everyone, young and old alike, was the “Medal Contest.”
First the children were taught to recite poems, poems of fine themes and great beauty. They then recited in the “preliminary contest”_the winners going on to
