The Museum’s “Laughing Boy” displays none of the troubles of a difficult life. Painted with enormous spontaneity and with each brush stroke in exactly the right and functional spot, the portrait shows at once Hals’ complete understanding of the joys of childhood and his intense pleasure in his ability to capture the regree and the impermanence of those joys, an impermanence symbolized in thus particular painting by the bubbles being blown by the child. The painting was the gift of Mrs. A. D. Williams to the Museum in 1949, and continues to communicate the pleasure of its creator to all the Museum’s viators. That too, may be a kind of contradiction, for it is a permanent expression of an impermanent pleasure, lasting permanently.
