Silas Woodward, who was confined in Rappahannock County jail on three charges of breaking and entering, made his escape from the jail between bedtime and 1:30 ajn. by way of three locked doors. At 1:40 ajn. Deputy Guy Burke, who is custodian of the jail and lives , in the building, was awakened by Sonny Deal, a prisoner awaiting trial for burglary. Deal came from his cell to report that Woodward had escaped.. .1
Mr. Burke found all of the doors to the jail wide open. Apparently with outside aid Woodward was gone. The theory is that some one had entered the building and taken the keys from a desk in the hall, opened the outside door, the cell block door and die door to the cell, freeing Woodward. If this is correct, the keys were neatly re-; placed in their usual container on the desk. This would be perfectly plausable since the back door to the - hall was hot locked. * t
Deal, who was in the same cell with Woodward, claims he heard nothing and was awakened only by cold air from the doors-kft open.
On December 17 Woodward pled guilty to three charges of breaking and entering: Russell „ Brothers in Flint Hill, Rappahan- * nock Cold Storage, Sperryville and Washington Fruit Growers Cooperative, Washington and was to be sentenced after a pre-sentence report was given by the Parole Board.
Woodward had been visited on Tuesday by friend* of his and relatives of Roy Lee Burracker* who had been acquitted of the same _ charges as were placed against. , Woodward for lack of evidence. *.
