Dear Folks,
This year four Rappahannock 4-H members are exchange delegates to Hampshire County, Massachusetts which is in die mid-western part of the state.
After boarding a Greyhound bus at Centerville and a short stop for lunch at the National 4-H Center in Washington, D. C., we continued to New York City for an over night stay. In Manhattan we visited Radio City Music Hall and the United Nations. Upon arriving in Northhampton, Mass, we each departed in a different direction to the homes of the fabulously friendly “Yankee’ families.
Since my arrival here, I have seen much of the farmland which is like our own Piedmont, except that there are thousands of acres of untouched woodland. My host family is centrally located between Chesterfield and Worthington. Chesterfield is celebrating its 200th anniversary July 14-22, beginning with a gala costume and semi-formal ball on Saturday, July 14th. Other interesting events to take place during the week are a water ballet, a parachute jumping exhibition, a re-enacting of the first town meeting by the local Girl Scout troop and a house tour of colonial homes dating back to 1780.
After only three days here, I have seen so much and enjoyed myself so immensely I actually hate to think of coming home, but I won’t forget how much I love the Old Dominion.
