Carnival goers were dampened last night as the Washington Fire Company and Rappahannock Rescue Squad attempted to open their four night benefit carnival. Tuesday and Wednesday’s rain, welcomed by all, did however, put a damper on carnival activities. The festivities will continue tonight, Friday and Saturday. The feature of tonight, Thur» day, is a parade which will include fire and rescue equip« ment, majorettes, bands, floats and other entries. The parade beginning at 7 p.m. will travel the usual route from the elementary school grounds to the carnival grounds on Route 211 just east of the town. _

And the Rains Came— Drought stricken Rappahannock and surrounding area received the first substantial rain tfciis week that has fallen all summer. Beginning Tuesday morning with spasmodic showers during the day, the precipitation settled down to a steady fall by night. Wednesday morning the official measure at Washington was 2.48 at 7 p;m.; in Amissville 1.58 Unofficial measure reported by several residents in the area between Washington and Sperryville were 4.50 early Wednesday, and it continued in a downpour throughout the day.
