Murat Williams, Madison County cattleman and former diplomat, announced this morning that he will seek the Democratic nomination to the House of Representatives from the Seventh Congressional District of Virginia. Williams told a news conference that he would attempt to gain the Party’s endorsement at the district convention to be held this spring. The incumbent, John O. Marsh, Jr., has said that he would not seek the Democratic nomination this year. In making his announcement, Williams said “I think the Democrats of the Seventh are interested in vigorous, new leadership. I believe I can provide this leadership and assure the election to Congress of a fellow Democrat who will play a part worthy of the great area he represents.”
The former Ambassador to El Salvador cited his 25 years in the armed forces and the Foreign Service as valuable experience in dealing with the federal bureaucracy. “I can cut red tape,” he said.
