The account of what followed cannot be entlrfly verified, but it came to this reporter in the following fashion.
Two strangers were downstairs in the fire house inspecting the new apparatus as the Blue Ticks cut loose with their first number, “Great Jehospaphat Man, What’s That?”, said one. “Must be a pack of hounds on a hot trail”, ventured the other. “But they ain’t loose; they sound inside and right upstairs!”
Silently they crept upstairs using a fire rescue jump net for protection in case the pack attacked them. Cautiously they pushed the door open a crack. To their astonished eyes, there stood the spectacle of a character answering to the description of Cousin Minnie Pearl* directing a contingent of seven men in a howling, yowling menagerie of barks and bellows as she urged them on to greater efforts with an umbrella which she used as a baton. Even though they actually were men, the unmistakable baying of each specie was easily identifiable. The deep-throated woof of the Bassett was traced to Charlie Priest. Accompanying this, but in no sense in harmoney, was the anxious high pitched Beagle cry of I’m-close-to-the - rabbit, attributed to Ted Settle and Nelson Burner, while that agonized howl of it’s-up-this-tree, was distinctly an old coon hound, expended by Stanley Settle. The short staccato bark was none' other than Tony Layman, the contributing dachshund. Narrowed down to one of the two remaining was a syncopated yip of the intrepid wolfhound.
