Fabrics with large bold textures and surface designs, also increase the apparent size of the wearer. They are most effective in simple dress designs where attention is focused on their beauty and not on the pattern.
Very fine textured, closely woven fabrics such as crepe are suitable for the more intricate dress designs. In darker colors, they absorb light and decrease the apparent size of the wearer.
Plain surfaced fabrics of a solid color are uninteresting in themselves, but they convey a lot of attention through the dressmaker’s use of folds, darts, and tucks.
Printed surface fabrics require simple dress designs because unusual cuts are often lost in the printed figures.
Bold geometric designs such as plaids and polka dots are unbecoming to some people. Care must be taken to make sure the scale of the design is in keeping with the size of the wearer. “Continual evaluation of combinations of fabrics and dress designs will sharpen the eye and ease the job of making decisions on how best to use them,” Miss Groseclose said.
