WHILE WE WERE ENJOYING country ham biscuits, pineapple wedges and sipping ice tea after the twilight fruit growers meeting, Tom Lee walked over and told me that he thought it was about time I got a group of farmers together and took another trip.

I told Tom that Animal Industry Day was coming up sometime in July down at V.P.I. And Tom said that’s just where he would like to go. Gordon Thornhill, who was standing nearby, said, “The program looked exceptionally'good this year and he was planning on going anyway.” Harold Scoggin spoke up and asked if he and his son, Bill, could come along. And that’s how the idea of a bus tour to V.P.I’s Animal Industry Day on July 20 was conceived.

To help defray expenses and get the tour rolling, the. Rappahannock Farmers Co-op, Rappahannock National Bank, Farmers and Merchants Bank of Flint Hill and Eddie Sutphin chipped in a total of about $200.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT-Sen. Harry F. Byrd will discuss the future of Virginia Animal Agriculture. Following the Senator’s talk, you can walk at your leisure among the numerous exhibits and demonstrations. New Pest and Parasite Control for Livestock, Liquid Supplements, Grass Tetany in Beef Cows, Current Pink Eye Research and Hay and Forage Handling Equipment will probably be amongst the topics of most interest to Rappahannock farmers.

The traditional pork barbecue and burger lunch will be served courtesy of several agri-business and producer organizations. After lunch, there .will be a presentation on low cost wintering systems for beef cattle and sheep.

The day will be closed with a discussion and demonstration of the latest in hay and forage handling equipment and methods.

We know you will enjoy and benefit from the program and above all traveling with us will help brighten the trip. Stop by and reserve your seat by giving $5 to any of the above sponsors. They will take care of all expenses. □
