In February of 1952, Kuncewicz immigrated to the U.S. as an ex-Polish serviceman and settled in Westbury, L.I. After a period as a laborer, he became a contractor and builder.
In The New York Times he saw an ad for the Old Kennels property between Amissville and Flint Hill. He came, liked what he saw and purchased it the same day in 1959.
The following year he started quarrying and crushing Virginia native quartz for use as “exposed aggregate” in precast concrete panels for office and institutional buildings. This plant was located at Criglersville. In 1962 he sold this business and retired briefly.
KUNCEWICZ contracted with W. L. Rochester in 1963 to buy Rochester Ropes in Culpeper, and after organizing a group to finance the deal with the help of the late “Reds” DiGuilian, he took this business over in 1964.
In 1969, he designed and produced the first American-built double drum vibratory rollers for compaction of earth and asphalt in confined areas. Witold is married to the former Dorothy Adams, a native of Michigan and they have a son Alexander, 8.
