“RAPPAHANNOCK County was the only Piedmon County to lose population (-3.1%) during the last decade. Most of this population decline is attributed to farmers going out of business.
“From 1959 to 1969, over 200 farms were lost in Rappahannock, 42% of all farms in the County. With only half of the County in farms, this loss of 15$, of farm acreage is significant.’’
Theso statistics have been released by B. Powell Harrison and the Piedmont Environmental Council’s Committee. The Committee, formed WfSt June, has issued a “Preliminary Report on Farming in the Piedmont,” dealing with the economic problems of agriculture in the region.
The reason for the decline in Rappahannock is mainly an economic one, says the PEC. Farming simply is not profitable.
