Fawn survival

Once again space-age technology is helping wildlife managers better understand the problems that wildlife face.
Tom Logan of the Oklahoma Department of Conservation used radio transmitters on 22 fawns to determine how well they survive. In some years over 50% of the fawns died—the major cause of death being blood loss and infection resulting from tick bites.
In general, the most healthy fawns survived the tick bites. When food was abundant, deaths caused by ticks were minimal.
