The growth is the best indicator of soil. Pine lands are always sandy or gravelly and dry and are unfit for the production of agricultural crops. Land which affords a good growth of fir and larch is of a better character and may be depended upon to be fertile for several years. The best indicator of rl.ch soil Is the alder. It grows only upon rich, moist, loamy soli. Seldom are these soils sour, as Is the case with the rich bottom lands on which cedar and spruce thrive best. Ail though spruce and cedar land can be sweetened, the time and labor when reduced to dollars and cents would be prohibitive.
